Horse Science

Hi, I'm Rosie!
I have been Home Educating my children for nine years and they are now 18, 16, 15 and 13. The eldest was home ed all the way through to their A-Levels and is now off at University studying Physics. My son studied up to his GCSEs at home and is now at college studying Computer Game Design, which leaves me just with my two youngest still at home. We are a very neurospicy household.
As well as Home Educating my own children, I am a qualified teacher and I teach for one of the online providers – Wendover Online School. At Wendover I am the Key Stage Three Science Lead and I also teach IGCSE Biology. In addition, I privately tutor maths to the end of KS3 and Science to GCSE. I have an enhanced DBS and am on the update scheme and I also hold the Scottish version - a PVG. I regularly do safeguarding training.

I have been riding all of my life! Although I taught all of my children (and my husband!) to ride, I have no formal qualifications in riding, just an absolute love of horses. I currently own ten, although the four “children size” ponies are all out on loan, so I have just six at home. I’m very fortunate that they live in my garden in Aberdeenshire. I ride as often as I can and I have just started backing my youngster. I also have heaps of other animals, including dogs, cats, ratties (who live in my studio so often make an appearance in lessons) and poultry.
Horse Science is lower secondary science through the lens of horses rather than horse specific science. It is possible to deliver almost the entire lower secondary/KS3 science curriculum this way, although there may well be a couple of “mop up” topics at the end.
It is a one-hour live session with a PDF follow up and worksheet (for those who want to do it, no pressure at all from me!). I have a max of 7 in the lesson which allows me to get to know everyone a little better and encourages interaction. Although KS3 is 11-14, I have had 10 year olds in classes who have done very well.
Lessons are in block of six and I make the blocks as free standing as I can so that they can be picked up and put down. Each block is based on a particular aspect of horse care/management such as, “The Science of Feeding horses”, “The Science of Field Management” etc. Lessons are recorded for those who have to miss them. The recording is only shared with the class, never with a wider audience. The cost of a six week block is £30 per student.
