The Marie Kondo Method™ was developed by Japanese Author and Best Seller, Marie Kondo. She describes the method in her book, “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up” and in further detail in the follow up, “Spark Joy”. She has also starred in her very own Netflix show, “Tidying up with Marie Kondo”.
Clearly, she has written a lot on the subject and I only have a few words here, so I am going to limit myself to describing the method very briefly.
In The Marie Kondo Method™, we start by committing to tidying and then imagining our ideal lifestyle. The more clarity in the vision, the better, as those with the clearest vision are often the most successful.
Once we have our vision, we work in categories rather than rooms and we work through those categories in a specific order, set up to make the process more likely to be successful. The order of the categories is Clothes, Books, Papers, Komono, and Sentimental. When we are working through the categories, we focus on what we want to keep, rather than what we want to discard, which rather changes the focus from other decluttering methods. We choose want to keep based on those things that Spark Joy and support us in our ideal life. We leave storage solutions to the end as we frequently find that we do not need anywhere near as much as we initially thought we might!
