Decluttering Makeup

Welcome to week 19 of Tidy 2020. This week we’re going to be looking at Make Up, but before we get into that, I’d just like to thank everyone who enquired about my pony. It’s been a long day taking him to the Equine Hospital but, despite the vet’s initial very downbeat prognosis, his tooth was successfully extracted within a couple of hours and he’s happily recuperating at home.

So, onto Make Up! As with every other category we cover, your end result will look very different from the next person’s. There is no right number for this, only the right number for you.

Start, as usual, by collecting all of your make up supplies together. This might mean rooting it out of handbags, travel bags, the bathroom, the hallway, your bedroom etc. Sub categorise it into lipsticks, mascaras, powders, eye shadows and so on and then take a good look at it. Which of those items are your favourites? Which do you reach for on a daily basis? How about when you are going out? Those are the ones you want to keep. Let go of the others, even those that cost a lot of money, but you don’t use because they weren’t right, but you don’t want to let go of because they were expensive – you’re not going to get your money back with them sitting in your toiletry bag! Take it as a lesson learned.

I don’t have much make up as I don’t wear it a lot, but many of my clients and my friends choose to keep quite a lot. Once again, it’s important to remember that this is a very personal choice and there is no right or wrong.

The other thing to remember is that many items of make up have a use by date on them and it is important to discard them once they have been open longer than this date. They can grow quite nasty bacteria on them, so it’s important to let them go. Like the toiletries, consider keeping a sharpie with them so that you can label when they were opened and know when you should discard them.

A final bit for this week is that you should give the make up brushes that you are keeping a good clean!
